Eligibility Criteria for
Import Export Registration

Who can apply for IEC?

  • Legal Entity

    Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Company, Trust, HUF, or Society.

  • PAN Card

    Valid Permanent Account Number (PAN) issued by Income Tax Dept.

  • Bank Account

    Current bank account in the name of the entity.

  • Required Documentation

    Identity proof, address proof, and proof of establishment must be submitted as per the entity type.

  • Single IEC Rule

    An entity cannot apply for a new IEC if an IEC is already issued against the same PAN.

When is IEC Not Mandatory?

  • Personal Use: Goods imported/exported for personal use not connected with trade/manufacture.
  • Government Entities: Ministries and departments of Central or State Government.
  • DGFT-Specified Exemptions: Certain entities or transactions exempted under the Foreign Trade Policy.

Restricted Goods in India

Items requiring special permission or licensing

Agricultural

Seeds: Certain seeds require permission from the Ministry of Agriculture. Pesticides and Insecticides: Import and export are restricted and require approval from the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee.

Animal Products

Live Animals: Import/export of live animals requires clearance from the Animal Quarantine and Certification Services. Meat and Meat Products:Restricted and require a sanitary permit from the Export Inspection Council.

Chemicals

Toxic Chemicals: Import/export of toxic chemicals is regulated and requires permission from the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Ozone Depleting Substances: Restricted and require clearance from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Drugs & Pharma

Narcotic Drugs: Import/export of narcotic drugs requires approval from the Narcotics Control Bureau. Medicines and Pharmaceuticals: Restricted items require clearance from the Drug Controller General of India

How to Apply for Import-Export License Online

Visit the online portal of DGFT. Click on the ‘Apply for IEC’ tab.

Fill Applicant Details

Fill up details (Name, mobile, email). Enter OTP sent to mobile and click ‘Submit’.

Submit business details (Establishment date, PAN, account details). Click ‘Submit’.
