What is Udyam?

Udyam is an online system for registering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), launched by the Union MSME Ministry on July 1, 2020. Alongside the launch, the government also revised the definition of MSMEs.

Over 88 lakh MSMEs have already registered through the Udyam portal. Any person may register their enterprise for free using a fully digital, paperless, self-declaration based process.

Udyam Registration is essential to avail benefits of MSME schemes such as the Credit Guarantee Scheme, public procurement policy, government tenders advantage, subsidy schemes, and protection against delayed payments.

Upon completion, businesses receive a digital Udyam Registration Certificate that includes a dynamic QR code linking directly to the enterprise’s information on the official portal.

Aadhaar, PAN, and GST numbers are mandatory for registration. The portal is seamlessly integrated with the Income Tax and GST systems, allowing investment and turnover details to be fetched automatically from government databases.

The Aadhaar number must belong to:

  • Proprietor – for proprietorship firms
  • Managing partner – for partnership firms
  • Karta – for Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)

Misrepresentation or suppression of facts during Udyam registration is punishable under Section 27 of the MSMED Act, 2006.

An enterprise can have only one Udyam Registration. However, it may add any number of manufacturing or service activities within the same registration.
